gen 22

Question
Answer
Note---10-02-2016

Gen 22:1 Tempt = try test

Gen 22:2 Moriah = "chosen by Jehovah"
Why is God asking Abraham for a human sacrifice, something that He has never asked for before?
God had never intended for Abraham to sacrifice his son. God has never requested human sacrifice and this must be seen as a test and nothing else.
22:2
Why didn’t Abraham raise an objection?
It seems that Abraham was just obedient.
22:2

22:2 Every aspect of this test is represented in the type. Even the fact that God mentions a mountain in his request tells us that it was on a hill or a high place that the “lamb of God would be sacrificed”

22:3 Abraham divided the wood

22:4 Although the scripture mentions the third day, there does not seem to be any bearing on the type.

22:5 Abraham prophecies that he will come back with Isaac although he knows in his heart that he will slay Isaac.

In the first instance Abraham stated Sarah was his sister because of fear, however he was confessing that the Lad would come back because he believed God would bring the lad back.

22:6 Although this is the first mention of knife, we know that the tool must have been in use before this.

The father and the son separate from the servants, deeper into the type.
Why is the Father and the son only mentioned in this verse? If this is a type, are we to understand that the Holy spirit did not play a part in Christ’s crucifixion?
Possibly since the dispensation of the Holy Spirit did not begin, this is the reason why the Holy spirit is seemingly not represented here.
22:6

22:7 Isaac become curious about the sacrifice.
Why did Abraham not reveal the plan of God to the servants, Sarah and not even Isaac himself?

22:8 Abraham answers Isaac.

We get some details about the character of Abraham. He seems to be very secretive, or his words seem to always have double meaning.
Why is there no mention of Sarah at all, in this event? Why is there no record of the conversation, between Abraham and Sarah? Would this event not have increased the faith of Sarah as well, if this was

22:9 There seems to be emphasis on the wood as if the wood had some bearing on the type that it was pointing to.

Note there is no further discussion between Isaac and Abraham, yet we see Isaac surrendering to his father on the Altar.

It seems at some point Abraham must have explained the thing to Isaac as now we see him surrendered to Abraham on the Altar.

Note Abraham was over 100 years old and Isaac a young man, this must have been a surrender on Isaac’s part, because he was more than able to either outrun or fight off his father.

The emphasis is usually on the faith of Abraham; no doubt this event was also about the faith of Isaac. It must have made the event more significant to Abraham however to see his teenaged son surrender in this way.

Maybe had Isaac objected it would have shaken the faith of Abraham.
Could it be that Isaac only heard thunder and not clear instructions given to Abraham?
The scripture is silent on this questions, consequently we can only speculate.
22:11-12 More than likely Isaac also heard this voice, given that this was not a whisper. Although there have been instances in which God speaks from heaven and only one person is recorded to have heard and understood.

22:13 This speaks to the fact that God provided. It must not be understood this was a place filled with rams. Neither must it be understood that this is a mere coincidence. This was a deliberate provision of the Lord.

22:14Jehovah-jireh = "Jehovah sees"

22:15 The scripture is emphatic and clear that this was the second time that the Lord called unto Abraham from heaven. This too is consistent with the type.

22:17 the word “in” seems like it could have been replaced with the word “when”
Is it possible that the fact that Nahor’s children are mentioned here succeeding the blessing of  Abraham that Nahor could have been a recipient of the benefit of the blessing that was pronounced upon Abraham in verse 17?

22:20 It seems that Abrahams brother also had children in his old age.

22:21 Father is to be understood as founder of the Aramites. Similarly to Esua being the founder of the Edomites. Aram is not necessarily his son, but these people descended from Kemuel.

22:23 Note mention is made of the origin of Rebekah, who later became the wife of Isaac.
22:24 Note that Nahor had children with his concubine. Although Abraham was the first mentioned to have done this, it seems it might have been a practice that preceded Abraham. While Abraham had an excuse as to why he would have children with Hagar (his wife’s concubine) what was Nahor’s excuse for having children with his concubine?

This is the first mention of the word concubine, but based on the use of the woman, the term concubine was attached.
