exodus 33

Question
Answer
Note---10-02-2016

1)    Note that after the people are cleansed God gives marching orders to go to Canaan.

It is interesting to note that between Exodus Chptr 3-40 occurs in just one year

2)    The people’s faith in the Lord was weak. Despite of how God had kept them through the year and despite of the fact that God had said that there was an angel going before them, there was still doubt in the camp.
Could it be that the people’s faith was weak because the miracles wrought did not depend upon their faith, but rather the faith of their leader?
It seems ironic, but where there is sight, there is no need of faith. The people were witnesses to God’s glory, yet their sight alone did not provide the confidence needed to depend on God for everything.

It seems that once sin is in the heart no amount of miracles will cause the heart of an  individual to change. Faith does not come by miracles, but by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
The people should have had faith in God more than anybody else, because they saw the miracles that God wrought for them. However it was the very opposite.

They heard the word of God, that He would deliver them, and God cannot lie, yet His word was not sufficient for them.

3)    The word for mill, does not necessarily mean something sourced from an animal, it can also mean the abundance of the land.

God uses language the people can  understand. (milk and honey was just an expression used to describe something sweet and pleasant.)

3. Again the mercy of God shines forth. God knows that the people are going to reject him. He knows that His presence would consume the people if they rejected Him.

So that it cannot be said that He did not give them a chance to go up to Canaan as was promised He still sent them, knowing fully well that they would not go. But in the Presence of God their dis-obedience would cuase them to be consumed . God not wanted to consume them, sends His angel to go with them.

4)    Ornaments were fancy jewelry that was worn on the clothes.

What is the significance of the ornaments? Is it because they had made the ornaments their God?
We understand that when a person was in mourning they would dress in sackcloth and ashes. Maybe taking off the ornaments and fine cloth was a way of showing remorse.

Although the men had already decided not to wear the ornamental clothing, maybe God was saying take it off, and I will see who for sure is sorrowful that they have sinned against me.

NLT
33:5 New Living Translation
For the LORD had told Moses to tell them, "You are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I were to travel with you for even a moment, I would destroy you. Remove your jewelry and fine clothes while I decide what to do with you."
33:5
Usually the tabernacle is represented as being in the center of the camp, with 3 tribes encamped in each direction, how do we reconcile this idea, that Moses planted the tabernacle outside of the camp, and what is typically shown?
At the time this was the case, further into Israel’s history it would be represented as is typically shown.
33:7
Why does the scripture say that Moses spoke to God face to face?
It is not likely that God made Himslef into a man-like figure (Abraham/Job) with which Moses could relate, but rather that there was back and forth conversation, as if God was right there face to face with Moses.

33:20 This verse seems to contradict verse 11. However what we are to understand is that Moses could have talked with Moses back and forth as God was present with him.
What is Moses asking to see? What is the glory of God that Moses would want to see? Is he just simply wanting to see God?
It seems Moses was asking for a closer walk with God, and this was not the regular run of the mill, curiosity to know what God looks like.
Moses had requested to see God’s glory, however this was something that no man before had ever requested, and consequently the declaration that God makes. That no man can see his glory (face to face) and live.
Where is this rock that Moses was hid?
It was not in the sanctuary, but in the mount, note how chapter 34 begins.
Note that God had been hid by the cloud which would ascend and descend as the need was for Moses to talk with Him. But now, because of this request, God would allow Moses to see Him, as He was, but only His back parts.
Was this conversation between Moses and God taken place in the Sanctuary?

Where is this place, “near me” that God refers to? If God is truly omnipresent is not everywhere close to Him? What is God saying in this verse?

21
The Lord has appeared to several men in the past, as a man, and he appeared as a man in his incarnation. What on Earth is He talking about, when He says that no man can see His face?

Is He talking about His glory, that no man can see and live? What is His glory?
It seems that the Lord is saying that Adam is the only  man who has ever lived to see Him as He is.
God was warning Moses that none has ever asked for this, before now, and this was a special request.

It seems that Moses is asking for something that no other man before him has ever asked and consequently why God would say that no man can see this and live.
Was Moses the regular inquisitive mind, wanting to finally put a face to the voice He was hearing all this time?

Why doesn’t God say I will declare My name before you, Instead He says the name of the Lord?

19
We know that in the dealing with mankind, it has always been the WORD/Jesus who speaks to us. Is this an instance in which the son is declaring the father before Moses?
