Gen 19

Question
Answer
Note---

19:1 Lot recognized that these were angels. As a result, he bowed himself before them.

19:2 Also he addresses them as lords, showing that he addressed them courteously.

It is obvious that Lot recognizes a distinguished/noblemen appearance about these visitors. Given the reputation of Sodom and Gomorrah it would not seem wise for him to greet strangers and invite them into his house had he not recognized something ‘good’ about them.
Why were the angels eating again, didn’t they just eat by Abraham?
Since the angels took on human form, it is possible that they could have been hungry. Especially if they had walked the entire way. See map below.
19:3 This is the second time it is recorded that the angels are eating.
Why did Lot haste the angels to leave?
It is understandable that Lot was trying to protect them. It seems he did not recognize their divine origin.

19:4 It seems that this as the greeting party. This was the norm and consequently why lot wanted to protect the men.

19:4 This was shortly after sunset it is supposed since, night life was not a common thing at this time. Although the presence of the citizens of Sodom show the perversion by their presence at Lot’s house.
Did the citizens wait till night fall to visit Lot’s house, because it was unlikely that the visitors would have travelled in the night?

19:5 Note the level of perversion of the citizens of Sodom. Not only were they active in the night, they did not hide their intent to violate the men.

19:8 The fact that Lots offers his daughters in place of the men, suggests that Lot knows that these men are servants of the Lord (about the Lord’s business). It is in this verse that we assume that Lot must have seen these men before.
Could it be that these men had probably helped Lot before, and he recognized them, wanted to preserve them from the evils of Sodom and consequently offered his daughters as ransom?

19:9 Based on the commentary of the men of Sodom, it seems Lot returned to Sodom with the other citizens after the battle in (gen 14:16, 21-22). It can be assumed that since Lot was an established relative of Abraham, the man that rescued them, he was not violated. However they promise to do worse with Lot, if he did not turn over the men to them.

19:9 The cup of iniquity of Sodom was now full. The restraining spirit had been withdrawn, consequently they were carrying out all their evil intentions without any conscience.
Of the list of person’s mentioned in this verse, why is not the wife mentioned?

19:12 Note that the people who the angel mention are actually in the house with lot. One son in law, probably 2 or more sons, 2 or more other daughters.

19:14 an appeal is made to get those outside of the house.
Did Lot’s house have a back door; or were the men gone from the front? How did Lot leave to go get his in-laws?

How could the sons in law respond this way? Did they not hear what took place at Lot’s house that night?

19:14
Could it be that the son in law and the sons previously mentioned left the house, even after they saw and maybe heard what was said to Lot by the angels in the night?
It is not clear why the angel only lists the women with Lot. The sons are not among the list neither the son in law which was previously mentioned.
19:15 After Lot had went out to preach all night to his family, nobody responded, and the instructions to him has changed. “Get you and your wife and your two daughters out.”

19:15 Even with the warnings and signs not everyone in Lot’s house was saved.
What else transpired throughout the night? Did they just go to bed/sleep?

It seems the men slept and awoke early the next morning, awaking lot and his family also.

19:15 It seems there is no one else in the house since the angels only mention the women and tack on unto their speech “that are here”

19:16 It seemed Lot was trying to gather a few possessions to take out of the city. However, time had expired and his packing was described as lingering/loitering (wasting time)

19:16 Note the angels held on to them by the hand, consequently what they could have carried out of the city (if anything) would have been what they could carry in one hand.

19:16 This is definitely early in the morning, at the first sign of light.

No doubt Lot and the other citizens of Sodom were still asleep. Hence the men removed Lot and his family from the city without incidence.

19:17 It seems that the angels only brought them half-way so as to test their obedience.

19:18-20 Lot is about to lose everything that he has worked for, his humanity takes the better of him and he demonstrates fear/lack of trust as he raises the objection that something bad might happen to him if he goes to the mountains.

It is very ironic that Lot who initially chose everything, lost everything. All his servants, his goods, and his other family members but in spite of his initial error, he still chose to live in the plain. Even after being told that the plain will be destroyed.

We are told to abstain from even the very appearance of sin, yet Lot still wanted to live as close as possible to the action.
If this city was to be destroyed with Sodom and Gomorrah how is it that an angel makes the decision not to destroy it, seemingly without consulting God.
Based on the title that Lot addresses the angel, it seems this was the Lord he was speaking to.
It seems that the entire plain was going to be destroyed, including the city that Lot had mentioned. However, the angels of God saved the city because Lots requests to go there.

Zoar = "insignificance"

It seems God was inviting Lot to a closer walk with him in the mountains, similar to the relationship that Abraham and God had, however Lot did not perceive the invitation and preferred to stay in the plain.

Lot could have opted to go live with Abraham in the mountains, but that too was not entertained.

Gen 19:26 Lot’s wife looking back has dual application. She turned first in her heart which then led her to turn around and look. Blatantly disobeying the command given in 19:17.

Lot’s wife was a Sodomite. She had live there all her life. It would have been harder for her to let everything go.

19:29 This verse seems to confirm that Lot was not worthy to be saved, and it was solely upon the account of Abraham that he was saved. However, in the same way that God had informed Abraham Lot was also being informed. Had Lot not been righteous He would not have passed the test, but would have turned to a pillar of salt like his wife, or just perished in the city.

Remember that the actions of the angels and were before-hand approved by God. Consequently, they had been sent to Sodom with the direct purpose of saving Lot. 2 Pet 2:6-8

19:31-35 Although this is an incestuous act, note the period in which they lived, this type of thing was not outlawed by God (yet). As abnormal as it may seem, it may have been the customary thing to do given the circumstances.

19:36 Rather than taking his daughters among other family members (Abraham) he chose to live in a dark cave.  This seems to be indicative of the relationship that He had with God. He seemed to be running away from a closer walk with Him.

Note it was in the cave that the incestuous relationship occurred. No doubt the daughters of Lot were not immune to the sins committed in Sodom. As a result, they could conjure up this plot of sleeping with their father.

It is no doubt a miracle that the two daughters of Lot are ovulating at the same time, that they both could get pregnant after laying with their father only once, and the offspring be male.

19:37 Moab = "of his father"

19:38
I.Ben-ami = "son of my people"

19:36-38 It seems it was very important back then for the seed of the father to be preserved.

19: The interesting thing about Lot is that he probably led a depressing life after this. It is unclear given the fact that he went to live in a dark cave if he recovered from this loss. Especially if the cave is an indication of his spiritual life.

19: It seems rather odd that Lot would be drunk two nights in a row without him previously having a habit of drinking. Unless it was not the wine that that got him drunk, but some other thing in his drink that made him drunk.

gen 18

Question
Answer
Note---10-02-2016

18: The Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre is the title of the chapter. Then the details are supplied in the succeeding verses.

18:3 Abraham said my lord, addressing the men. The title used could have been used to address God.

Consequently it seems that Abraham understood that these men were not ordinary men, but messengers from God.

It could be that Abraham had observed the men before doing something miraculous or these very men had visited him before. Either way Abraham recognized them as heavenly beings.

It seems that Abraham recognized God among the three men. God had visited Abraham several times before, in this same form and consequently Abraham readily recognized Him.

18:6 Jesus uses this same story as a parable matt13:33

18:6 the word hearth was supplied. While it is understood that is where the cake would have probably been made, adding the word was not necessary.

18:7-8 This was a most exquisite meal. A young calf and butter. This was the first mention of butter.

Note the making of this butter would have taken time and would have been a delicacy to have with our meal. Abraham did not make the butter then, but it no doubt was the best that he had to offer.

18:8 The angels ate meat.

It is interesting that they ate. It seems that when angels take on the form of humans they take on human characteristics. It is not clear how far they can go, or how far they can indulge.

18:9 Note that it is not recorded that  Abraham introduced Sarah to the men, however they could call her by name.
It would have been alarming under other circumstances however it was not because he knew they were angels.

18:11 Note Sarah was no longer seeing her period.
Sarah speaks of pleasure, could it be that she was talking about sexual relations or was this solely about the delight that having children bring?

18:12

18:12-It seems that the God of this era is more merciful than the God of the later generations. Both Sarah and Abraham laughed at the prophecy of God and it does not seem they were punished?

Note that there were different circumstances surrounding each act of God. He is God He does not change, however as the situation requires he acts.

18:15 Sarah lies to God in the face. Nothing happens to her. Note it was out of fear that she lied. God is merciful to fear it seems vs deceit.

It could have also meant that she did not realize that she laughed, since the scripture recorded she laughed within herself. There was no intent to be disrespectful or deceive.

18:16 Note that the angels here are classified as men (they partook of the food which Abraham gave them, displaying human-like characteristics) consequently we can say that they took on flesh. From previous verses we know that one of the angels was actually the Lord 18:3. However, the incarnation of Christ was special, because he did not just appear as man, but went through the entire birth and growth process.

18:17 Note that God wanted to show Abraham what He was about to do. He spoke and it is not said who He is addressing, however from other parts in the bible we know that when God speaks it is for the edification of all His creatures, and not just those on Earth. Also angels were present, it could be assumed that God was actually addressing them, since it is obvious he is not addressing Abraham, and the angels are the only other ones present.

18:20 The Lord is now addressing Abraham.

Also note that the use if cry is figurative. It seems similar to the cry that the earth made when it received Abel’s blood (Gen 4:10). Consequently, we say that it was not the people crying out, because there was none righteous in those cities.

18:21 Everything that God does is with the intention to teach. So when God declares that He is going to investigate, it gives Abraham insight into why He is about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.

Also it shows the grace of God in that he is not swift to punish. In spite of the report received, God wants to extend mercy and so personalizes the investigation.

18:22 Abraham stands and talk with the Lord

18:25 Here the argument is strengthened that God had to reveal to Abraham what He was about to do, so that His character was not misrepresented to Abraham.

18:25 Note the common discourse between the two, it is obvious that Abraham was the friend of God. To the point that it sounds as if reverence was lacking.

There does not seem to be anything fake or hypocritical about the relationship that Abraham has with God.

18:33 Note that although the Lord had said that He would go to Sodom, he did not. It is apparent that the sole purpose of the Lord visiting was to inform Abraham of what was about to happen.
