Gen 11

Question
Answer
Note---10-02-2016

11:2 The they in this verse seems to be the descendants of Ham. Since the plain mentioned is shinar, and the descendant Nimrod of Ham, built a city there 10:8-10

11:3 note the difference in building material. It seems to me that this material would be flood resistant.
Unlike Noah they did not use wood, nor pitch. But instead made brick and used slime.

11:4 Their plans were in direct contradiction to the instruction of God to populate the earth.
The built with stone instead of wood
The wanted to reach heaven on their own terms
It is not clear why they would want a separate name, but given the other things they did, this too might have been a violation of God’s plan.
Why did the Lord come down? Is this a coming down to interact with man?
It seems because men did not want o populate the whole Earth, God came down to have them populate the earth.
11:5 children/sons of men are Ham’s descendants.

11:6 strength in unity

Was this scattering geographic or idealistic?
I believe that this scattering was geographic, since the initial command was to fill the Earth.
11:4 & 8.
Was the separating of the languages specific to the sons of men, in the plain of Shinar, or was it a worldwide event?

If it was a worldwide event (and it seems like it was) why would the servants of God need their language separated? Wouldn’t this have slowed or diffused any momentum that would have had?
It seems consistent to think that that the separation of the language was only for those that dwelt in the plain of Shinar. If there were righteous people ( and there were ) their language would not have been confounded.

To have confused/confounded their language would be to retard God’s purpose, so those who were righteous and doing right, kept their language.

11:9 This seems to be a contradiction to our findings. However it is not a contradiction. In order for the thoughts to agree,  one must believe that ll the righteous regardless of their geographic location, spoke the same language.
Which would have led them to unite.

11:10 Note that with the decendants of Shem (the righteous lineage) a timeline is established.

11:11 We believe that the descendants of Shem would have been living together and thus spoke the same language.

11:14 thirty years first son. To have had a child this early tells me that he was assigned his wife.
The earliest recording of child birth before this was 65. Gen5:15
After the flood, several generations were having children in their 30’s.

11:24 Nahor had his first at 29 years

11:29 Notice the verse says they took wives, which means that they did not take the wife that was assigned to them.

And there is evidence that the women assigned were usually their sisters or next of kin.
Nahor married to his niece and later we find out that  Abram married to his half-sister.

11:31 Note that it was Terah (father) who went forth from ur and carried lot and abram with him.

11:32 Terah hied in Haran
