Adullamite = see Adullam "justice of the people"

Hirah = "a noble family"
38:1

Shuah = "wealth"

Shuah is the father of the cannanite woman. Hirah is another woman that Judah had intimate realtions with but never married.
38:2 vs 12

Er = "awake"

Onan = "strong"
38:3

Shelah = "a petition"

Chezib = "false"

Tamar = "palm-tree"

Why did Onan spill his seed and why did he die.
Maybe he spilled his seed because he did not want to raise up children for his brother. Maybe this was the case because he envied his dead brother’s possessions.

The Lord probably slew him for this act, because he did not object to it, but was willing to go in unto the woman but not to impregnate her.

Why did Judah promise Tamar his youngest son?
Judah must have felt guilty, and wanted to repay Tamar somehow.
38:11

NLT 38:11 (But Judah didn't really intend to do this because he was afraid Shelah would also die, like his two brothers.) verse 14.
So it seems that Judah believed that there was something wrong with this woman that she was the cause of his son’s death.

Judah wanted to get her back to her father’s house, but she was shelah’s wife by custom.

He seemingly did not want to give his youngest son this woman to wife.

As long as Tamar’s husband (Judah’s son) had a living brother, she was not at liberty to marry whomever she please.

As a matter of fact it seemed that this was widely known and accepted, by all men, thus no man wanted Tamar.
What is the purpose of the widows garment? Was this to keep men away or to advertise that a woman is available?

38:14 Note Tamar was obedient to the command of Judah and wore widows clothing all the years it took shelah to grow up.
It seems that women were much easier to get pregnant in those days.

It seems irresponsible of Judah to give this woman seed, knowing in his heart that she was a harlot.

Did harlot in those days have lots of children without father’s?

Nlt "Then let her keep the things I gave her," Judah said. "I sent the young goat as we agreed, but you couldn't find her. We'd be the laughingstock of the village if we went back again to look for her."
38:23
Is Judah a just man for condemning Tamar to be burned?

38:24 Maybe Tamar had felt betrayed and thus did what she did to get back at Judah.

Judah is acknowledging two things.
1 That Tamar is more righteous that he
2. That the things she has are his
3. He did not have the intention of giving her to Shelah his third son.

In the sverse it says Judah knew her no more. It seems that she wass now assumed a member of the househould of Judah, because eshhe had his child. However he did not have any other relations with her.

Perez or Pharez = "breach"
It is just so interesting that this is the lineage through which Jesus came.

Zerah or Zarah = "rising"
